Know Your Rights: What to Do if ICE Comes to Your Door

In these uncertain times, it is important for you and your family to know your rights. Many people feel scared when they hear that ICE is in their community, but remember: you have rights, and knowing them can protect you.

If ICE agents come to your door, follow these steps to protect yourself and stay calm.

Do Not Open the Door

ICE cannot enter your home without a warrant signed by a judge. No matter what they say or try, if they do not have that warrant, you are not obligated to let them in.

  • Ask Why They Are There
  • Request an interpreter if you need one.
  • If they say they have a warrant, ask them to slide it under the door or show it through the window.

Be careful: An ICE warrant (Forms I-200 or I-205) DOES NOT give them the right to enter without your permission.

What If They Insist on Entering?

If they do not have a warrant signed by a judge, tell them they cannot enter. If they try to force their way in:

  • Do not resist.
  • Tell everyone in the house to remain silent.
  • Ask them to leave any information at the door.

Remember: Anything you say can be used against you, so it is best to remain silent and wait for legal help.

What to Do in Case of Arrest

If ICE detains you, follow these steps:

  • Remain silent. You do not have to answer questions about your immigration status.
  • Do not sign anything. ICE may try to get you to sign documents that could harm you.
  • Ask to speak with a lawyer. This is your right.
